Add-ins For Cookies
These cookies are great, but some add-ins can take this recipe up a notch.
- Chopped walnuts add some crunch.
- Slivered almonds are another great addition.
- Mini chocolate chips add more chocolate flavor to the cookies.
Change The Color For Different Occasions
The good thing about M&M candies is that they make colors for every occasion.
We usually use mini M&Ms to make these cookies but regular-sized M&Ms come in many colors to match a mood or holiday.
Red and green M&Ms for Christmas. Pink for Valentine’s Day. Pastel colors for Easter.
We have even used this cookie recipe for bridal and baby showers.
Tips For Making These Cookies
Making this recipe is easy but these tips will help ensure the best results.
- Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature so that it mixes well with the sugar.
- Don’t overbake the cookies. They should be soft and slightly wet in the center when they are removed from the oven.
- Cool the cookies for 1-2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Then promptly store them in an air-tight container to keep them fresh.
- Use a cookie scoop to make evenly sized-cookies. We use the smaller scoop in a set most of the time, but the medium-sized one is how you will get 24 cookies out of this recipe.
How To Store Cookies
After cooling, these cookies should be kept in an air-tight container. They will stay fresh for up to five days when stored this way.
To keep cookies fresh for longer, store them in the freezer for up to three months.
Serving M&M Cookies
These cookies make an appearance at Christmas for us every year. We add them to cookie baskets and exchanges because they are colorful.
But these cookies can also be served at any time of year. During the summer we like to use them to make ice cream sandwiches.
They are also requested by many of our friends and family.

These M&M cookies look like such a fun treat! I like how they strike a balance between classic chocolate chip cookies and a colorful twist with the M&Ms. The texture you described—crispy on the edges and chewy in the center—sounds perfect.
Do you think this recipe would work well with other candies, like Reese’s Pieces or chocolate chunks, or is it best to stick with M&Ms? Either way, it’s a great recipe for sharing with kids (or adults with a sweet tooth!).
