What Ingredients Are Needed For Mediterranean Bow Tie Salad?
This recipe is pretty simple and takes only eight ingredients to make.
- Bow Tie Pasta. Farfalle is the actual name of the pasta. Cook the pasta to al dente and allow to cool to room temperature before making the salad.
- Tomatoes. We like to use plum tomatoes, but sometimes we will use cherry or grape tomatoes, cut in half.
- Cucumbers. For this recipe, we only use English cucumbers because they keep their shape better than field cucumbers.
- Olives. Our go-to is black olives, but sometimes we use green or a combination of the two.
- Oregano. Fresh or dried oregano can be used in this dish. When using fresh, we like to chop it very finely.
- Lemons. The zest and juice of a lemon are used in the recipe.
- Feta cheese. There are different kinds of feta. We like to use a traditional feta made from sheep’s milk. But there is also Canadian-made feta, which is made from cow’s milk, and it will work in this recipe as well.
- Greek Salad Dressing. It can be store-bought or homemade.

Can Other Types Of Pasta Be Used In This Recipe?
Yes. Any shape of pasta can be used. We like the bow tie shapes, but have used fusilli. Tri-coloured fusilli is also a good choice to add more colour.
Tip For Making Pasta Salad
For best results, cook the pasta al dente and rinse with cool water after draining. Let the pasta come to room temperature before making the salad. Using hot pasta may cook the vegetables and it will absorb the dressing.
How To Serve Pasta Salad
When serving pasta salad, it should be served cold. For backyard BBQs, we like to make sure the tables are set up in a shady spot so the sun is not “cooking” the food on the table.
Sometimes we like to put the salad on ice if it is hot outside. The salad can be placed in aluminum pans with dome lids. We fill the lids with ice and place the pan of salad on top to keep it cold longer.
Storing Leftover Mediterranean Bow Tie Salad
Any leftover salad should be refrigerated immediately. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3 days.
If the salad has been sitting out in the heat for longer than 1 hour, or in the direct sun, it may need to be discarded to avoid foodborne illnesses.
