We have bought frozen corn dogs, aka Pogos, for our kids, which they heat in the air fryer. Then one day our kids asked why we don’t make them from scratch. And that got us thinking about homemade corn dogs.

Ingredients For Homemade Corn Dogs

To make this recipe, you will need:

  • Cornmeal. We use fine-ground cornmeal for this recipe.
  • All-purpose flour.
  • Baking powder.
  • Baking soda.
  • White sugar.
  • Sea salt. We use fine sea salt because it dissolves better into the batter.
  • White pepper. Black pepper can be used if you don’t have white.
  • Large eggs.
  • Buttermilk. If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make it by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to a measuring cup and filling it to 1 cup with regular milk.
  • Wieners.
  • Vegetable oil for frying.

Serving Corn Dogs

Homemade corn dogs are best when they are served hot with something to dip them in. They make a great snack or as part of a lunch or dinner.

We like to dip these in different kinds of mustard. Everything from regular yellow mustard, honey mustard, and hot mustard.

Try our Honey Sriracha Mustard Sauce for dipping these corn dogs in for a sweet and spicy flavour.

Our kids like corn dogs dipped in ketchup, especially our homemade ketchup.

We also like to make these as part of a game night snacking table. We add things like our Pizza Rolls, some wedges, fries, and other deep-fried and air-fried foods to snack on through a playoff game.

Variation Of Corn Dogs

For corn dogs, we use all-beef wieners. But other types of hot dogs can be used.

Mini sausages are also a great substitute for wieners. This is a great way to make corn dogs into appetizers.

Foot-long wieners can also be cut into pieces to make bite-sized corn dogs.

Storing Leftover Corn Dogs

Leftover corn dogs should be kept in an airtight container and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Homemade corn dogs can also be frozen for up to two months. To freeze the corn dogs, let them cool completely first. Then place them on a tray in a single layer and freeze for two hours. Transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag and store in the freezer.

Reheating Frozen Corn Dogs

There are a few ways to reheat corn dogs. Our favourite way is in an air fryer. We place them in the air fryer and cook at 375° for 6-7 minutes.

A microwave in another way these can be reheated. Place them on a plate and microwave for 1 minute, then for 30 seconds at a time until heated through.

Appliances vary so reheating corn dogs may take more or less time to reheat depending on the model and make of the appliance.
