What Kind Of Bread To Use For French Toast Sticks?
Day-old bread works best for making these French toast sticks. We like to use homemade bread that we slice about ¾-inch thick.
Brioche or Challah bread also works well for French toast. And we have also had great success with Texas Toast.
One of our kids’ favourites is raisin bread. The cinnamon and raisins in the bread add a different level of flavour.
Equipment For This Recipe
To make this recipe, a large frying pan works well to fry the French toast sticks. We like to use cast iron, but a deep frying pan works well.
A thermometer is handy for reading the temperature of the oil. If the oil is too hot the French toast sticks will darken too quickly. If the oil is not hot enough, the batter will absorb the oil.
A wire rack or cooling rack is great for placing the French Toast sticks on when you remove them from the oil. This gives them air on all sides while they cool and the oil drips onto a pan placed beneath the rack. No soggy bottom. We use a set we purchased on Amazon.
How To Serve Deep Fried French Toast Sticks
To serve these breakfast treats, we sprinkle them with powdered sugar and serve them with a small bowl of maple syrup for dipping.
We also like to dip them in Brandy peach sauce instead of maple syrup.
These can also be served with maple syrup poured over them and eaten like French Toast.
Coat warm sticks in cinnamon sugar and let them cool for a treat you can enjoy at room temperature.
Our kids made ice cream sundaes with leftovers by adding scoops of ice cream, then topping it with chocolate and caramel syrups, and fresh fruit.
These are also great to serve with Fried Apple Rings.

What To Do With Leftover Deep Fried French Toast Sticks
Any leftover sticks should be refrigerated and used within three days. To reheat them, simply place them in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes or until heated through. They can also be reheated in a microwave but they won’t be crispy.
Leftovers can also be frozen in air-tight containers or freezer bags for up to two months. Reheat from frozen in the air fryer for 4-6 minutes.
