Ingredients for French Toast

This simple recipe uses the following ingredients:

  • Eggs.
  • Milk.
  • Vanilla extract.
  • Cinnamon.
  • Nutmeg. (optional)
  • Sugar.
  • Salt.
  • All-purpose flour.
  • Day-old bread.

What Bread To Use For Easy French Toast

The recipe calls for Texas Toast, but you can use any bread of your choice. We prefer thicker bread like Texas Toast or Challah Bread. But in a pinch, we have made this recipe with regular sliced bread. We don’t recommend brown or whole wheat bread, because it just doesn’t seem to absorb the egg mixture as well.

Another great option for bread is Brioche. It is sweeter than regular bread, and the softer texture soaks up the egg mixture, without having to use stale bread.

Also, make sure the bread you use is not fresh. Day-old bread works better because it tends to hold the egg mixture in more and does not fall apart when transferring from the egg mixture to the pan. Usually, we try to use a loaf of bread that we have had for at least 3 or 4 days.

Variations For French Toast

One bread variation that some of my kids like is using cinnamon raisin bread to make this recipe. It adds a little more flavour, and the raisins add texture to the finished product. When using raisin bread, cut the cinnamon in half in the egg mixture.

Also, the addition of nutmeg adds a little more flavour, but not everyone likes nutmeg, so it is optional. You can also sprinkle nutmeg on top of French Toast before serving instead of adding it to the egg mixture. We do this because I love nutmeg, so whether it is in the recipe or not, we add nutmeg on top with cinnamon and confectioner’s sugar.

What To Serve With Easy French Toast

This recipe can be served on its own. Or you can serve it with sides.

You can also serve this toast with eggs, bacon, and hash browns to make a big breakfast like the ones in restaurants.

Fancy it up

For special occasions, like Mother’s Day, French Toast can be fancied up.

  • Instead of maple syrup, try fresh berries and whipped cream.
  • Drizzle with chocolate syrup.
  • Fresh strawberries and grated chocolate.
  • Peaches and crême fraiche.
  • Nutella and chopped hazelnuts.

Turn French Toast into a Dessert

Yes, French Toast can be a dessert. This was our daughter’s idea. She tops warm French toast with ice cream and chocolate syrup. She calls it her French Toast Sundae.

We have made many Sundaes using leftovers by adding different toppings. Fruit, caramel, marshmallow creme or fluff, sprinkles, Nutella, and chopped hazelnuts. The kids have also used Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal as a topping.

There are many ways to top French Toast to turn it into a dessert.

What to do with leftover Easy French Toast

We make larger batches on the weekend and store them in an air-tight container in the fridge to have on hand for a quick weekday breakfast before school or work.

Leftover French Toast can also be reheated on a sheet pan in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes. Or you can reheat them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, but they will be softer and lose the outside crunch. A toaster, set at 3-4 minutes, also works well for reheating, although toasters do vary, so the timing may need to be adjusted.

Leftovers can also be frozen for later use. Place slices in an air-tight container or freezer bag, with parchment paper or waxed paper between the slices. Freeze for up to 3 months. Heat the toast from frozen in the oven or microwave until heated through.

Our family loves french toast! I had never thought about using cinnamon raisin bread to make it, it sounds yummy! We use Texas Toast for our french toast since it’s thicker.
