Quick and easy to make, this recipe for homemade whipped cream is our go-to for many of our desserts. Made with only three ingredients, homemade whipped cream is better than any of the store-bought ones.

We have tried using Cool Whip, Dream Whip or canned whipped cream, but they just don’t compare to homemade, especially when you read the ingredients list on store-bought.
Ingredients For Whipped Cream
Making this whipped cream is so easy, and you only need three ingredients:
- Whipping cream. We use 35% cream and do not recommend anything lower in fat for this recipe.
- Powdered sugar. This type of sugar is used because it blends in better with the cream than white sugar, which can make the whipped cream grainy.
- Vanilla extract.

Add-ins To Change The Flavour
It is easy to change the flavour of whipped cream by replacing the vanilla extract with another flavour.
We have used peppermint, lemon, coffee, and many others. When using different flavours, it is best to start with one quarter of a teaspoon and taste before adding more. This is because different flavour extract can have stronger flavours or be more concentrated than others. We have found mint extracts can be very strong so we start with only a couple of drops at a time.
If you’d like to make this chocolate-flavoured, add two tablespoons of cocoa powder to the mix for a lightly flavoured chocolate whipped cream. Less powdered sugar may be needed when adding cocoa powder. We like to whisk the cocoa powder into ¾ cup of the powdered sugar, then add it to the whipping cream to ensure it mixes evenly into the whipped cream.
Equipment For Making Homemade Whipped Cream
There are two ways to make this recipe, and both yield great results.
A stand mixer is the easiest way to make this recipe. The ingredients are added to the bowl, and then the stand mixer is set to a high speed and left to do its work. We use this way when we are busy baking and cooking large meals for holidays.
A hand beater is another method for making whipped cream. This method does require you to hold the beater while it does its thing, but it does produce the same results. We like this method because there is less of a chance of overbeating the cream.
Tips For Making This Recipe
When making this recipe, the cream will whip better if the bowl and the beaters are chilled.
Don’t overbeat the cream or it can turn into butter. This is important because you want the cream to hold together and be thick, but not overly thick.
Uses For Whipped Cream
Homemade whipped cream can be used in all the same ways you would use store-bought.
Over the holidays, we keep a container of this whipped cream in the fridge because it is great for all kinds of desserts. We also add it to our brunch table for topping pancakes, waffles, and French toast.
We like to use it on pumpkin pie, especially our Pumpkin Chiffon Pie.
This whipped cream also makes a great topping for hot chocolate and milkshakes.
We recently purchased a Ninja Creami, so now we have Homemade Whipped Cream on hand for our frozen coffee drinks.
Storing Whipped Cream
This whipped cream will stay fresh, covered, in the fridge for up to three days.
