What Is Needed To Make These Rolls?

To make these bacon apple cinnamon rolls, we combine two of our recipes with a few extra ingredients.

The base of this recipe is our easy-to-make cinnamon buns recipe. We have made this recipe using pre-made cinnamon roll dough, like Pillsbury. This saves time, but the flavour is not the same as homemade.

The filling for the cinnamon buns is replaced with our apple pie filling. Canned apple pie filling can also be used.

We then add a few extras to create a sweet and salty treat.

Ingredients Needed For This Recipe

For this recipe, which is in three parts, these are the ingredients you will need:

For the rolls:

  • Milk.
  • White sugar.
  • Dry active yeast.
  • Butter.
  • Egg.
  • All-purpose flour.
  • Salt.

The filling:

You can use canned apple pie filling or make the filling from scratch:

Apple pie filling:

  • Honey crisp or Granny Smith apple.
  • White sugar.
  • Cinnamon.
  • Nutmeg.
  • Cardamon.
  • Butter.
  • Lemon juice.

If you are using canned apple pie filling, add the nutmeg and cardamom to the filling since most canned pie fillings do not have these ingredients.

You will also need:

  • Cooked Bacon.
  • Cinnamon.
  • Brown Sugar.
  • Butter.

Icing:

The icing for these rolls is optional, but we highly recommend it.

  • Powdered sugar.
  • Milk.
  • Cinnamon.
  • Vanilla Extract.

Equipment to Make This Recipe

We highly recommend using a stand mixer to make the dough. Like any yeast dough, it has to be kneaded, and a stand mixer makes this easier. We have two stand mixers and have tested them with this recipe. Our Kitchen-Aid mixer is our go-to, but we understand they are a little pricier than other models. Our second mixer is a Hamilton Beach model, and it performs well.

To bake these rolls, we like to make them in a muffin tin. We line the tin with 3-inch liners because they hold any apple pie filling that seeps into the bottom.

To cut the cinnamon rolls, we use a pizza cutter. We slice the dough into strips before rolling it. We have found that this works better than slicing after rolling.

Serving Bacon Apple Cinnamon Rolls

These rolls are best when served the same day they are made. Serve these rolls warm for the best results.

We add these to brunch buffets, but they also make a great breakfast or morning snack. Of course, our kids eat them at any time of the day. And they don’t care if they are warm or room temperature.

Storing Leftovers

Store these cinnamon rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours. They will stay fresh in the fridge for up to three days.

These can also be frozen for up to three months and thawed at room temperature before serving.

Reheating Bacon Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Reheating the rolls can be done in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.

Our favourite way to reheat these is in the air fryer for about 3-4 minutes at 300ºF.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • cup warm milk
  • 1 Tbsp dry active yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 3⅔ cups all-purpose flour
  • cup melted butter, cooled
  • ½ tsp salt

Filling Ingredients

  • 6 slices cooked bacon, chopped
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1-1½ cups apple pie filling (see notes)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Icing Ingredients

  • cups powdered sugar
  • 1-2 Tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

Dough

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the milk, sugar, and yeast, stirring to combine.
  • Allow to rest for 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
  • Once activated, add melted butter, egg, flour and salt to the yeast.
  • Using the dough hook, on low speed, mix for 1 minute to combine ingredients.
  • After 1 minute, turn up the speed to the next level and allow the mixer to knead the dough for 3-4 minutes. The dough will be slightly sticky and will pull away from the sides easily.
  • Turn the dough into a slightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and then a tea towel.
  • Let rise 2-3 hours in a warm place until doubled in size.
  • Once doubled in size, punch dough down and turn it onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Press or roll dough into a rectangle 12 inch wide by 18 inches long.

Filling

  • Brush dough with melted butter.
  • Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon over the buttered dough.
  • Evenly spread the apple pie filling over the brown sugar cinnamon layer.
  • Sprinkle the bacon over the apple pie filling

Assembling the Rolls

  • Roll the dough on the long side to make one 12 inch long log.
  • Cut the log in half. Cut 1-inch slices from each log.
  • Lightly grease a 9-inch and 13-inch pan with butter or cooking spray. Or cover bottom of pan with parchment paper.
  • Place cinnamon rolls in the pan side by side.
  • Cover pan with a tea towel and let rise 20 minutes
  • Preheat oven to 375℉ while the rolls rise.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 22 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  • Remove from oven and cool in pan for 2-3 minutes before topping with icing.

Icing

  • Whisk all the ingredients together until smooth.
  • Pour the icing over the buns and serve.
