Ingredients For Spicy Sambal Pork Noodles
The recipe has fewer than ten ingredients and is very simple to make.
- Pork Shoulder. For the pork in the recipe, pork shoulder is used because it cooks well in a slow cooker and is very tender when slow-cooked, making it easy to chop or pull apart.
- Sambal Oelek. This chili sauce packs some heat and is perfect for a noodle dish.
- Garlic. Adding garlic helps to bring out the flavours of the chilis in the Sambal Oelek.
- Ginger. The addition of ginger complements all the flavours of the sauce.
- Brown Sugar. A little sweetness rounds out the flavour in this dish.
- Soy Sauce. The saltiness of soy sauce balances out the heat and sweetness of the other ingredients.
- Limes. Both the zest and the juice are used in this recipe. The zest and juice are added to the pork while it cooks, and some lime is reserved for squeezing over the noodles when served.
- Ramen Noodles. Use your favourite ramen noodles to make this dish.
- Green onions. These are added to the finished dish for colour and flavour.
What is Sambal Oelek?
Sambal Oelek is a chili paste that originated in Indonesia. It is similar to Sriracha except that it contains the seeds of hot peppers and garlic and is thicker.
Typically made from red hot peppers and vinegar, Sambal Oelek has become popular in North America. Although there are different brands, Huy Fong Foods seems to be the most popular and is our choice when cooking with Sambal Oelek.
Is This Dish Easy to Make?
Yes, these Sambal Pork Noodles are easy to make. It may seem complicated, but it isn’t.
The pork cooks in the slow cooker, so it doesn’t take a lot of effort. Our favourite slow cooker is by Hamilton Beach because it is easy to use, is programable and comes with a temperature probe.
Can Spicy Sambal Pork Noodles Be Cooked On A BBQ?
The short answer is yes, this dish can be made on the BBQ or smoker. We have smoked the pork shoulder instead of slow-cooking it.
To do this, we make the sauce separately in an aluminum pan that we can place on the smoker when there are about 30 minutes left to cook the pork.
Then, once the pork is fully cooked, it gets shredded like pulled pork and added to the sauce.
The noodles are cooked and added to the pan with the noodles and pork and served.
How To Serve Spicy Sambal Pork Noodles
To serve these noodles, it is best to serve them in a bowl while they are hot.
They are great on their own or with a side salad.
Add some steamed vegetables to complete a meal.
We love serving this dish with cornbread mini muffins. They are perfect for soaking up all the sauce in the bowl.
Storing Leftover Spicy Sambal Pork Noodles
Leftover Sambal pork noodles should be covered and refrigerated. They will stay fresh for up to 48 hours.
Reheating can be done in the microwave or a pot on the stove. Additional liquid may be needed when reheating.
