A simple Homemade BBQ Rub that can be used for chicken, pork, or beef. Made with seven simple ingredients, this is one rub we keep on hand at all times.

This rub is a basic rub that we make. It has bold flavours that are great on beef and ribs. The recipe can be made ahead and kept on hand for later.
Making Homemade BBQ Rub
Making a homemade rub is so easy. All you have to do is measure out the ingredients and place them in a mason jar or container with a tight-fitting lid. Then shake it all together and it’s ready to go.
We can usually put a rub together in less than two minutes, it’s that simple.

Ingredients For Homemade BBQ Rub
Seven simple ingredients make up this recipe:
- Brown sugar. We use dark brown sugar or Demerara sugar for this recipe. But if all you have on hand is light/yellow/golden, those work as well.
- Paprika. Smoked or regular paprika works in this recipe.
- Kosher salt. The coarseness of Kosher salt is necessary in rub recipes. It helps to break down the outside of the meat to get the flavours of the rubs to adhere to the meat better.
- Black pepper. Coarse ground pepper works best, but regular grind is fine as well.
- Chili powder. If you want to spice it up a notch, try using ancho chilli powder.
- Garlic powder.
- Onion powder.

Equipment to Make This Recipe
Other than the ingredients, there are only two items needed to make this recipe:
- A closed container for shaking and storing the rub. We use mason jars.
- A measuring spoon. Only one size is needed: 1 tablespoon.
That’s it! Less dirty dishes are always a win for us.

How To Use This Homemade BBQ Rub
When it comes to using rub, it is fairly easy. Once the rub is made, simply sprinkle it over the meat and using your hands, gently massage the rub into the meat.
This works best for beef and pork. If you’re using it on chicken, it’s best used on skinless chicken, but it can also be rubbed under the skin of the chicken if it isn’t skinless.
