These Chilli Beer Brats are similar to chilli dogs but made with beer brats instead of hot dogs. These pack a lot more flavour than a chilli dog and are almost as easy to make.

Ingredients For Chilli Beer Brats

This recipe combines two of our popular recipes, Chilli and Grilled Beer Brats. To make this recipe, you will need a few ingredients.

  • Bratwurst. These German sausages are perfect with beer.
  • Beer. Any beer will work for this recipe. We usually use what we have on hand. Just make sure to use a beer that you like because if you don’t like the taste of a beer when drinking it, odds are you won’t like the taste in cooking either.
  • Onions. For this recipe, we like to use white onions because of their sweetness and mild flavour.
  • Chilli. This can be homemade or canned. Also, you can use a chilli with or without beans. Our preference is without.
  • Sausage Buns. Use your favourite sausage buns.
  • Cheese. We like to use a sharp cheddar, but other varieties can be used, like Monterey Jack.

Does The Alcohol Cook Out Of The Beer?

Yes, most of the alcohol will cook away while the sausages are cooking.

Can Alcohol-Free Beer Be Used?

Yes, if you prefer to use a non-alcoholic beer. There is a large selection of non-alcoholic beer available these days, and almost any one of these can be used to replace the beer in this recipe.

Why Cook Sausages In Beer?

Cooking sausages in beer not only adds flavour to the sausages and onions, but cooking them in beer also makes the sausages juicier.

Equipment for Making Beer Brats

The brats are cooked in the beer on the BBQ, so we like to use a heavy pot to cook them in, like a cast-iron Dutch oven.

An aluminum pan can also be used for making the brats. This makes for an easier clean-up.

Toppings For Chilli Beer Brats

There are many toppings you can add to these.

  • Diced jalapenos.
  • Cheese sauce.
  • Crushed tortilla chips.
  • Mustard.
  • Diced white onions.
  • Pickled jalapenos.

How To Serve Chilli Beer Brats

When it comes to serving these beer brats, they are best served hot and fresh.

We like to serve them with a side of tortilla chips and salsa. And they pair well with an ice-cold beer, like Corona or a German beer.

These brats can be served buffet-style with a variety of toppings and side dishes to complement the flavours. Additional chilli, queso, potato salad, and coleslaw are just a few things that can be served with these brats.

What To Do With Leftover Chilli Brats

If you have leftover sausages and chilli, they can be stored separately in the fridge to put together later. They will stay fresh in the fridge for up to three days.
