BBQ Sambal Chicken Wings

Sweet, spicy and a little sticky, these BBQ wings pack a ton of flavour with a touch of smokiness from the grill. Serve BBQ Sambal Chicken Wings as a snack, appetizer, or as part of a meal.

Marinated for an hour or overnight, the simple marinade for this dish is what makes chicken wings next level. And these wings take little time to cook on the BBQ, making them perfect for a quick dinner.

Ingredients For BBQ Sambal Chicken Wings

These chicken wings are marinated in a combination of eight ingredients:

  • Sambal Oelek. (A hot sauce made from red chili peppers)
  • Soy sauce.
  • Honey.
  • Sesame oil.
  • Fish sauce.
  • Garlic.
  • Green onions.
  • Lime. Both the juice and zest.

Marinating The Wings

The wings can be marinated for one hour and up to 12 hours. The longer they marinate the better the flavour will be.

The wings can be prepared in the morning, covered and stored in the fridge before cooking. We like to make the marinade the night before and keep it in the fridge so it is ready to go. Then we add the wings in the morning.

Garnishes For BBQ Sambal Chicken Wings

Garnishing the wings after cooking and plating is optional but adding a sprinkle of both sesame seeds and finely chopped green onions adds flavour and colour contrast to the dish.

Charcoal Or Gas BBQ?

The choice of cooking these wings on a gas grill or over charcoal is up to you. Either one will work. Each one will offer a different flavour profile.

Using a charcoal BBQ will add more smoky flavour to the wings.

Cooking the wings on a gas grill can be quicker and is a faster way to make this recipe on a weeknight.

The Tools We Use To BBQ Wings

There are two tools we use to make BBQ wings that we recommend. The first is long handled tongs that have a good grip, like these Napoleon Tongs. The edges on the ends help grip food when turning it, better than straight edged tongs.

A digital thermometer is essential when cooking any meat on the BBQ. It doesn’t have to be an expensive one. Our go-to is a TempPro Digital Thermometer that is waterproof and has a backlight which is perfect for fall and winter BBQing.

How To Serve BBQ Sambal Chicken Wings

BBQ wings are great as a snack, an appetizer, or as part of a meal. We like to serve these as a starter for our backyard BBQ get-togethers along with our Dry Rub Chicken Wings.

When serving these wings, serve them hot with a side of sauce for dipping. Blue cheese dressing, sour cream, or Ranch are just a few suggestions for dipping.

The marinade can be doubled reserving half the marinade to use as a dip for the cooked wings. Hot sauce is another great dip for these wings.
