What Kind Of Rum Is Used For These Cookies?

The type of rum you use for this recipe is up to you. We like to use Jamaican Rum or a spiced rum because they add a more intense flavour to the cookies.

Our go-to rum for this recipe is Appleton Estate because it is what we usually have on hand.

White or dark rums like Bacardi will also yield great results.

Why Soak Raisins For Cookies?

Soaking raisins before adding them to baking makes them plump, and it is a great way to add additional flavour to cookies and muffins.

How Long To Soak Raisins?

Raisins should soak for at least 3-4 hours. We prefer to let them soak overnight.

Soaking the raisins for 24 hours has yielded the best results and the most flavour. We don’t like to soak them for more than 36 hours, or the raisins can start to break down.

What’s The Best Way To Soak Raisins?

When it comes to soaking the raisins, we use a mason jar. Pour the raisins into the jar, add the rum, put the lid on, and give it a little shake to coat all the raisins.

Then shake the jar every couple of hours while they soak to make sure all the raisins absorb some of the rum.

What To Use Instead Of Rum

If you prefer a non-alcoholic version of these cookies, the rum can be swapped for apple juice, apple cider, or pineapple juice.

Does The Cookie Dough Have To Be Chilled for Rum Raisin Oatmeal Cookies?

Yes, the dough has to be chilled before baking these cookies. If you skip the chilling part of the recipe, it will result in cookies that spread too much and become flat and too crisp.

Serving Rum Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

These cookies make a great dessert or snack. But there are other ways to enjoy these.

Turn oatmeal cookies into an ice cream sandwich. Add a scoop of your favourite ice cream between two cookies for a cool summer treat.

Pair these cookies with our Bourbon Chocolate Chip Cookies for an adult party at Christmas or New Year’s.

These cookies also make a great gift for the holidays. Wrap them in printed parchment paper and place them in a decorative tin for friends and neighbours.

Storing Rum Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

These cookies can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to three days.

The cookies can also be frozen for up to two months.

Have you made these cookies? We would love to hear about it. Leave a comment below telling us what type of rum you used and how you served them.
