Three Ingredients For Making Easy Cherry Turnovers

To make this dessert, there are three simple and easy-to-find ingredients.

  • Cherry pie filling. To make 8 of these turnovers, you only need a little pie filling. We usually make these with leftover pie filling from other desserts.
  • Refrigerated Crescent Rolls. We use Pillsbury Crescent Rolls.
  • Sanding Sugar. If you don’t have sanding sugar, regular granulated sugar can be used.

How To Bake Cherry Turnovers

There are three ways you can bake these turnovers. The traditional way in the oven is how we started making these. But there are other ways to bake these that work just as well as in the oven.

Now we bake them in the air fryer. We have a French Door-style air fryer that doubles as an oven, and that’s how we make them, so we don’t have to heat a whole oven to bake a batch of these.

We also bake these on the gas grill or the pellet smoker when we are hosting a BBQ for friends and family.

Alternatives For Cherry Turnovers

This recipe works well with other pie fillings. We have made these with apple, blueberry, strawberry rhubarb, and raspberry pie filling. The fillings can be canned or homemade.

For the sugar topping, we like to use sanding sugar, but sometimes we switch it out with powdered sugar. When entertaining, I like to top the turnovers with pearl sugar because it pops out more for a fancier look.

Storing Easy Cherry Turnovers

If you have leftover cherry turnovers, they should be stored in an air-tight container. They can be stored at room temperature for up to 24 hours.

Store these turnovers in the fridge if you want them to last more than 24 hours. In the fridge, they will stay fresh for up to 3 days.

We have also had good results with freezing them for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Easy Cherry Turnovers

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can crescent dough
  • 1 cup cherry pie filling
  • 4 tsp sanding sugar

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350℉.
  • Unroll and separate crescent dough.
  • Place 2 Tbsp of pie filling on the larger end of each crescent dough triangle
  • Roll the dough over the filling like you would for crescent rolls.
  • Sprinkle ½ tsp of sanding sugar over each crescent.
  • Place on baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 12-14 minutes or until golden on top and crescent rolls are completely baked through.
  • Transfer to cooling rack to cool slightly.
  • Serve warm.
  • Store leftovers in an air tight container for up to 24 hours at room temperature or in the fridge for 3 days.
