Tourtiere Shepherd’s Pie is a comfort food that uses a Canadian favourite, tourtiere, to make a base for a shepherd’s pie. It is almost like a deconstructed tourtiere without a crust.

Alternative Ingredients

The ground pork in this dish can be replaced with ground beef or turkey.

The vegetables in this shepherd’s pie are diced and to save time we sometimes use frozen diced mixed vegetables. Our go-to is No Name diced vegetable mix that has onion, carrots, celery, and peppers.

To add extra vegetables to the dish, a cup of kernel corn can be added to the other vegetables.

Serving Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is almost a meal in itself. It is hearty and filling. We like to serve it with a side salad since there are not a lot of vegetables in the dish itself.

A side of garlic bread or baguette goes well with shepherd’s pie, too.

What To Do With Leftover Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie should be cooled completely before storing it in a covered container in the fridge. Use within three days.

Leftovers can also be wrapped and frozen for up to three months. Thaw at room temperature before reheating.

We like to cut the shepherd’s pie into serving-size pieces before storing it in the fridge or freezer. It makes a great lunch or quick dinner.

Reheating Shepherd’s Pie

There are a few ways to reheat tourtiere shepherd’s pie:

In a microwave oven. Heat on a microwave-safe plate or in a container, for 1-2 minutes or until heated through.

In the oven. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and bake until heated through.

An air-fryer. This is our favourite way to reheat leftovers. Our air-fryer is not a drawer-type air-fryer, it can also be used as an oven, similar to a toaster oven. In our opinion, it’s the best way to reheat any leftovers.
