Why Smoke Pumpkins?

The answer to this question is simple. It is an easy way to add flavour and is easy to do.

Smoking pumpkin is a great way to cook pumpkin. The pumpkin cooks evenly, and there is less mess in cooking the pumpkin this way because it is done outside using a pan.

Ingredients

To make this pumpkin puree, there is one ingredient: pumpkin. The entire recipe is made from pumpkins only.

Pie pumpkins or sugar pumpkins are the best ones to use for this recipe. We have never made this recipe with the jack-o-lantern-type pumpkins.

Smoking wood is also needed.

What Is The Best Wood For Smoking Pumpkin?

For smoking pumpkins, fruit woods work well. Apple, pear, or cherry wood complement the pumpkin.

Maple wood is also a good choice, especially if you will be using the pumpkin in pies. The maple wood gives just enough flavour to taste in the puree, and if you add a tablespoon of maple syrup to the pie filling, it tastes even better.

What To Do With The Pumpkin Seeds

Roasted pumpkin seeds are a family favourite snack, so we smoke them alongside the pumpkin.

The seeds can be roasted right beside the pumpkin on the smoker. Toss the seeds with oil and salt, place them on a sheet pan and roast them beside the pumpkin on the smoker.

Some chilli powder is also great to sprinkle over the seeds before smoking them.

How To Use Smoked Pumpkin Puree

Smoked pumpkin puree can be used in any recipe that you would use canned pumpkin puree.

Storing Smoked Pumpkin Puree

Once the puree is made, it can be stored in mason jars in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

It can also be canned and pressure-cooked to seal the jars. Once sealed, the jars will last 6-8 months at room temperature.
