What Ingredients Are Needed For Chocolate Sheet Cake?

With only 10 ingredients, this cake is easy to make. Here are the ingredients:

  • White sugar.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Baking powder.
  • Baking soda.
  • Sea salt.
  • Eggs.
  • Vegetable oil.
  • Milk.
  • Vanilla extract.

Ingredients For Chocolate Frosting

To make the frosting for this chocolate cake, you will need these five ingredients:

  • Butter.
  • Powdered sugar.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Milk.
  • Vanilla extract.

This frosting is light on the chocolate. If you prefer a deeper chocolate flavour, add 2 additional tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of milk to get a richer chocolate flavour.

What Sized Pan Is Used For Chocolate Sheet Cake?

To make this sheet cake we use a 16-inch by 12-inch cake pan.  We have also had success using a 12-inch round cake pan.

These pans will yield approximately 30 servings of cake. This makes the cake perfect for larger get-togethers.

Decorating Chocolate Sheet Cake

Usually, this cake is served right out of the pan. But if you’re serving this cake for a special occasion, it can be removed from the pan and decorated for a fancier look.

The frosting recipe can be doubled to make sure you have enough to cover the sides of the cake as well.

Add some colourful sprinkles to the top of the cake for easy decoration.

Add some sugar flowers or pipe words on the top of the cake with gel icing.

Storing Chocolate Sheet Cake

Cover the cake with plastic wrap and store it at room temperature for up to three days.

The cake can also be frozen for up to two months. This is a great way to store leftovers.

Chocolate Sheet Cake with Chocolate Frosting

Equipment

  • 16"x12" cake pan

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • 3 eggs
  • cup milk
  • ¼ cup melted butter, cooled
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Frosting

  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350℉
  • Generously grease a 16-inch by 12-inch cake pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together, flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with milk, melted butter and vanilla extract.
  • Pour wet ingredients into the dry and stir well to combine
  • Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Frosting

  • Cream butter in a large bowl.
  • Add half of the sugar and all the cocoa powder.
  • Beat on low speed until combined.
  • Beat in remaining sugar, milk and vanilla extract.
  • Continue beating until smooth.
  • Spread evenly over cooled cake.

Notes

This frosting is light on the chocolate. If you prefer a deeper chocolate flavour, add 2 additional tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of milk to get a richer chocolate flavour.
