No Better Pizza Than Homemade

Our kids are pizza lovers, but it becomes costly to order out when you have five teenagers who all want different toppings. And the cheaper options for pizza are just as they advertise: cheap. There is one pizza place that is low-cost cost but their pizza is so thin and lacks toppings. So much so that my teenage boys can eat a large pizza each, and that adds up when three large pizzas are needed just for them.

We prefer good pizza that is thick with all the toppings. But that comes at a cost. Four large, good pizzas would cost over $100. We needed to find a solution to our pizza dinners because the older the kids get, the more they eat. Not to mention that we love leftover pizza for lunch or breakfast the next day.

Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Dough

Making pizza dough is easy with only a few ingredients:

  • Dry active yeast.
  • Water.
  • Sugar.
  • Flour.
  • Salt.
  • Olive oil.

What is The Best Flour for Pizza Dough?

We started having homemade pizza days. We would make a couple of batches of pizza dough and make our pizzas. But something was lacking in the flavour and texture of the crust.

After a search online for making better pizza crust, we came across a few recipes that used “00” flour. We had not heard of this flour before, but we started searching the grocery aisles for it. And it was not easy to find. Local Italian shops carry it, but there were none in my area.

We drove to Little Italy and found a little store that carried it. But the drive there was out of our way, and the flour was expensive.

We later found “00” flour at Loblaw stores under their President’s Choice Black Label brand. That is where we have been buying it since.

This flour can now also be found on Amazon.

This Recipe Has Been Tested Over And Over

We have tested recipe after recipe to get the final results of this one. It took quite a few tries, but the final result was worth it. Our kids love this pizza crust. It is easy to make and can be made in the oven or on the grill. Our favourite way to bake pizza is on the Weber Kettle Grill, but it can also be done on a gas grill or the smoker.

Pizza Your Way

The great thing about pizza is that you can make your way. Add whatever sauce, toppings, and cheese you want, and you have your own creation. The kids love making these with their friends because they can make their way.

We like to make large batches of dough and divide it into enough servings so each of us has our own pizza. That way, everyone can make the pizza of their choice.

Individual Pizzas

If you want a smaller pizza, you can separate the dough into 12 pieces instead of six.

We do this when making extra pizza to freeze for another day. Don’t bake the pizza before freezing. Wrap each pizza separately in plastic wrap, place it in freezer bags, and freeze. When ready to cook, preheat oven to 425°F and cook for 12-15 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is browned.

When making this recipe, it is recommended that the pizza be cooked on a pizza stone. The stone should be preheated before placing the pizza on it to cook. This will prevent the pizza from sticking to the stone. If you don’t have a stone, a regular pizza pan can be used by adding a little flour to the pan and not preheating it.

What To Do With Leftover Homemade Pizza Dough with “00” flour

We don’t usually have leftover pizza dough unless we make a double or triple batch. Whenever we do make extras, we store the leftover dough in the fridge covered for up to 3 days. The dough can be portioned and stored in an airtight container until ready to use. Bring the dough to room temperature before using.

The dough can also be frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze, simply portion the dough into equal pieces, roll it into a ball, and place it in a freezer bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible before placing it in the freezer. Thaw at room temperature before using.
